The 3rd Battalion 71st Air Defense Artillery was a Nike Hercules air defense missile unit in Germany from 1957  until the late 1980's. The Battalion guarded against an attack by high altitude enemy bomber aircraft by maintaining radar surveillance of the skies over Germany 24 hours a day 7 days a week. If an attack were to have happened, they had to be ready to shoot down the attacking aircraft before any bombs could be dropped.
