I was stationed at B-3-71 as a 16C20 fire control operator from January 10, 1974 - July 14, 1976. I was a Hipar operator almost the entire time except for
being retrained for CBR during my last tactical evaluation in 1976, after my Hipar replacements had been trained. Those were two and a half years that I
wouldn't trade for anything. Made lots of good friends and try to keep in touch as much as I can. I have no problem with contacting soldiers that were
at the 3rd and 71st before and after I was there, so feel free to email me. larryswinney@swbell.net . I also have a photo website with pics of Bravo
at the time I was there, along with other albums. Feel free to look. Go to www.picturetrail.co/radar . If you can't access the photos, let me know.

Howard,
I came across the 71st ADA website. I was assigned to HQ Battalion in Kornwestheim from 1972 to 1973. SP 4 Comm Center Specialist. They moved us to
Ludwigsburg when the barracks were renovated and then back again. LTC Jean Leger was commander when I left. I would love to get a unit patch.
Can anyone tell me to find one?
Regards,

Howard, thanks for the awesome site! Was assigned to Alpha Btry IFC as a 16C from Mar 1980 thru Mar 1983.Was trained as a Hipar operator, but spent
the vast majority of my time in Comsec/Emas as a B team member. Being part of the "DRAGON'S BN" was an honor for myself as it should be for anyone
that had that privilige. Col Epperson was one who would very quickly let you know when you were wrong, but just as quickly if not quicker, commend you
for a job well done. bthornton41@yahoo.com
Would like to hear from anyone that was there at the same time.

I was assigned to B Btry and HHB in 76-77. I served at HQ as the PSNCO/SIDPERS and handled in and out processing as well as strength reporting.
I still remember most everyone I worked with SFC Young, Rod Lotspeich, Bruce Morrison, Leo Schreiner, Culpepper, to name a few. If you were in
that group I can be reached at Boogiemanz1@YAHOO.COM

Today I came across the site while I was googling Gary E. Epperson. I was shocked to see that it was an acknowledgement of his passing. I followed the link
and low and behold, a site dedicated to the men (and a few women) of 3/71 ADA AKA The Dragon Battalion.D Btry 3/71 was my first assignment in the
Army. I arrived in Nov. ’77. I was stationed there for 3 ½ years as I recall. Initially as a missile pusher then I was offered the mail currier position if I’d
reenlist (which I did). Sometime in 1980 I moved to Battalion and worked for the Dragon as his Public Affairs specialist (a position he created) during
which I created a Battalion mimeograph newspaper and later began submitting articles to the 32d AADCOM News. While at Battalion level, I had the
opportunity to get out to all Batteries and was also involved in the “history making” exercise where we road marched the Nike Hercules system under
Epperson’s command which was the first time the system was road marched since fielding of the system (according to the Colonel). I was at Battalion
until ’82 when I PCSed back to Ft. Bliss. I have many fond memories of not only Delta 3/71 but the Battalion as a whole. It was my stepping stone to
a 20 year Army career. A choice I will never regret.
Daniel Warren and I served as 31m40 radio op relay at BOC from 70-73. My time there can only be described as challenging. Did anyone go to the
Sheperds fest in Margroning? Not sure of that spelling but it was the city right before you got to BOC and the river. Would like to hear from other folks
in commo during that time. Does anyone know if CSM Alston or LT Hall are still alive?? You can contact me at danny_ray_warren@yahoo.com

Greetings
I am SGT. John M. Jones @ Wilkins 67-68. I married a
Kornwestheim girl in 69, two sons and 39 years later
still married. I have revisted Kornwestheim
many times since my duty days. Matter of fact I'm here now and have been since April 27th, my fourth trip here in twelve months, family illness
and a
death. I appreciate your sire very much and have
often wondered about a SPC 4 David Blount who was
here @ that time and went on to Nam.
Please post my message on you site and tell me if
there is a locator or a way to find out about
Blount' statis. Should David Blount read
this,Herr Rella
sends greetings, he's 84 and in
fairly good health.

Howard, Great website. My name is Ron Risser and I was assigned to B3/71 from July69-Jan71. As a 95Bravo, I was a tower jockey at B Battery and later landed
a job as a Bn. Personnel Clerk at HQ. Nothing but great memories of the times and friendships. I have vacationed in Germany a couple times and in 2000, my wife
and I took and son, daughter, and son-in-law to Kornwestheim. I was sad to see that most of Wilkin Barracks is gone. Did not make it out to GrossSachenheim.
May try to make it to a reunion. rdrisser@woh.rr.com

I was an MP stationed at C Btry 3/71 ADA Hardheim, Germany between 1979 and 1982. I want to thank you for your time and effort to create this
website. I hope that more people joint the guest book and maybe we can get in touch with some of the old friends. We called Hardheim, (Hardtime).
I remember many of the people in the Btry at that time and always bring me great joy. I would love to hear from them again. My e-mail address at

Every once in awhile, I find myself wandering down memory lane and wonder if there are any others who do the same. Well, I can't tell you what a joy it
was to run across your website. My name was Pam Curtis (PFC and SP/4). I served in A 3/71st in Dallau in 3/81 through 12/83. Also, in B 3/71st in
Grossachsenheim in 12/83 through 9/84. I worked on IFC, on the TTR, TRR, but my main job was the MTR. Also spent some of my time in EMAS
and pulling my share of guard duty; with my faithful companion, Mushka (black german shep. dog), nbc, cross training on Launcher Hill, along with a
few trips to NAMFI, Crete. I remember the "Dragon" very well. He would be breathing down my neck just waiting to pounce if I didn't sit on my hands
during the TAC Eval, yelling out, "MTR Reject", LOL. I also remember him shaking my hand and how it made me feel really proud, that was quite an honor
for a young MTR operator and soldier. I had allot of respect for the man. So, I just wanted to put my name out there and see if I could find anyone
who was there at the same time that I was. It was really like a family to me and the memories of those times will always be with me.
My email is michaela@dfn.com Thank you for this site, Sincerely, Pam Sneed, New Mexico

Robert Wilkinson notified me that he had read in a military publication that Bart Hanchett had passed away. I called and
spoke with Mrs. Hanchett, and she verified that LTC (Ret) Bart Hanchett had passed from this life July 7, 2007. Bart and Jane
(Barts wife) attended our 2006 Reunion. I personally had only met Bart at the 2006 Reunion , but there was enough time to
get to know one another and also we got to swap war stories,
Our prayers are with Jane and the Hanchett family.

Sir,
I was an MP stationed at Wilkins Barracks with Jim O’Connor, Pat Herron, Rick Loftus, Cliff Emery, ‘Pony’ Phillips, Kevin Noonan, and a whole slew
of other guys from 11/77 to 01/79. The worst part of my tour at Bravo Battery was the boredom - and trying to get comfortable in that blasted 4’ by 4’
plywood box sitting on top of that tower so I could take an unauthorized nap. I wonder how Sgt. Rottello is and if he still likes Black Russians. I
remember leaving Post 4 and taking the Barn keys back to the barracks with me and realizing I still had them. Quick! To the bahnhof, up the hill,
and down range. Loftus wanted to rip my head off when I got there! I also remember muddy mattresses, NATO inspections, the cold, the wind on top
of that hill, and the Luftwaffe flying their jets really low over Post 3, Tower 1, Post 4, and Tower 3. I love fighters and thoroughly enjoyed the
tremendous thunder and after-shock as they roared over us. Thrilling stuff at 18 & 19 years old! I transferred to an MP station in Zweibruecken between
Pirmasens and Kaiserslautern (K-town). I did a two week TDY in West Berlin and thoroughly hated it. When we got off the train in Berlin, our greeter
welcomed us with, “Welcome to the world’s largest POW camp.” That set the tone for next 2 weeks. Anyway, it was great finding the website,
looking at the photos, and reading everyone’s postings – it took me back to when I was thinner, dumber (well, I hope I’m smarter now), and
wide-eyed to what the world was showing me. I won’t be going to any of the reunions because that’s not my thing but I will be coming back to the
website to keep-up on the new postings. Take care.

Howard,
I just read thru the Guest Book entries and wanted to add my own comments. I served in HQ Brty., working at the BOC, from Oct 62 till
December 66. Part of that time the unmarried BOC personnel lived in the Bravo Btry. Barracks. I returned to Delta Btry 3/71 at Würmbergn
June 72 as a Fire Control Mechanic, was appointed Warrant Officer WO-1 in January 1973 and transferred to B/2/56 at Landau. Later in 1973
I managed to wrangle a transfer back to Bravo Btry of 3/71, since Gross-Sachsenheim was the birthplace of my wife, Inge. I served in Bravo
Btry as a Fire Control Warrant from September 1973 till my return to Ft. Bliss, TX. in February 1978. This gives me a service time in 3/71 of
about nine years total. I truly enjoyed my time in 3/71 in the 60s and the 70s, and spent a lot of time travelling in Europe I still keep up with a
few of my old friends by email. My
email address is: RSmithCW2@AOL.com.

WOW what a site. I was with HHB and worked 24 on 24 off in the BOC. 81-82 The top brass got tired of us trucking in and out so mid way through my
tour, the whole HQ platoon was moved out to Gross sach. Great memories of some fine people. Our XO was Christy Stevens, one of the first women
to graduate West Point Dave Media, Bill McNabb, Gregg Van Buskirk, Wally Wilson, Dick Russell, Tom Clifford, Chuck Mardis, Ron Puckett, and
Rodney “Foots” Johnson Great crew and we still have a tab at Cartwright’s I’m sure. Love to find pictures of the old place. I’ll keep
checking back. Regards, WARD G. SMITH, Ward.Smith.ctr@socom.mil Senior Media Editor USSOCOM/Joint Psychological Operation Support

Howard,
Bother Miltenberger told me about this site earlier today - what a treasure. Very well done. I was the Security Platoon Leader for C/3/71 from
November '79 - January '80. Then, largely through an unlikely confluence of events, I was selected by Gen. Means to be the Command Security
Officer in Darmstadt from January '80 - November '81. During my time in Hardheim I have some great memories to include quaffing snitzels at
Engels, winning Thursday night dart throwing contests at a Hardheim bar, the name of which escapes me and pulling a 24 hour shift in a tower
to see what my soldiers were going through. As the Command Security Officer, I visited all the Nike Batteries to see how the MPs were doing.
As you may recall, MP moral could get quite low, despite our fond memories. I had a 2' by 3' sign made for my desk that read "Where there's
an MP, there's a way" and have tried to live by it. I too carry with me still what I learned those three years and sometimes think "what would a
young officer do who was always trying to do the right thing?"
Cheers,
Tim McCune zich6@hotmail.com
Howard,
I was absolutely astonished to have stumbled across this excellent website!! I was equally astonished to learn of the passing of a very hard man,
COL (ret) Gary Epperson. I was the Security Platoon Leader for A/3/71 from May 80-April 81, then the BN S2 from May – Dec 81. COL Epperson
was an extremely hard man, but made us all believers in what it took to be an officer and a Soldier. I was saddened to learn of his passing. My
assignment at Dallau was a defining one for my subsequent career. The things I learned there in terms of leadership and what it took to care for
MP Soldiers who were working ungodly hours helped me throughout my 23 year career and eventual follow-on career in the civilian world. It
has been 20+ years, but I would really enjoy hearing from members of my old platoon, peers and even remaining superiors who served in
3/71 ADA 80-81. Please post this to the guestbook section. Thank you for the memories and for maintaining such a wonderful website. For
hose of us who served in those dark and spooky days, I thank you again for your time.
Regards
Dan Miltenberger

Ever since I left Germany in early 1980, I think back on the days I spent at Wilkens Barracks as an MP tower rat attached to B Battery 3/71st ADA. As
Chief O'Connor mentioned, we were bussed out of the barracks to the site for our 24 on 24 off shifts. I remember the towers pretty clearly and
spending the few hours off in the bunkroom playing "Risk" with the guys in between sleeping in filthy bunks covered in mud! Guess it was better
than digging a foxhole! I remember the jackrabbits and small deer in the fields surrounding the site and the sheer boredom of the towers. But
what I remember best is how different the town area was from here in New Jersey! I still don't think I've had a better beer than what I sampled
there! At the time I was glad to leave, I got a compassionate reassignment, but my time from late 1979 to early 1980 was certainly memorable.
If anyone has photos of Wilkens and the site at Grossachsenheim, please share them! Be well all, and thank you for your service. We were the
defenders of freedom and democracy back in those days; be proud!

Found some pictures of the old barracks, and then found this site, and could not believe that I found a couple of guys I served with! To the guy who posted the post dated

happened to some of the guys, would love to both say thanks and also apologize to Staff Sgt.Metts if I ever got the chance to, and would love to hear from anyone who
knows who the "Pforzheim 9" were.

Hi Howard,
Just "chanced" on your website, Was delighted and somewhat sadden.... Delighted to see that there is a movement to keep the "story" alive. Sadden to
see so many of us passed on.I was stationed at HQ (BOC) 1st Bn, 67th Arty from November 1962 to May 1963. I was, then, transferred to B Btry,
1st Bn, 67th Arty based at Mainbullau, Germany.I was a 16C Fire Control Crewman there until February 1968. I returned to Btry B in Mainbullau
March 1969 and, in fact, was with the final crew that closed the site down. I then moved to Hardheim to C Battery which had been taken over by
the 71st Arty and I served there until April 1972. I will always remember my wonderful experiences during those years.
Please add me to the rooster even though I am, currently, living in the Philippines running a business I own. I will continue to follow the group.
All my best wishes of good health and long life to all my ADA comrades.

Hi Chief Webb - I was directed to your great site shortly after a 30th Artillery Bde (Okinawa) reunion this past fall.
I am Larry Manning LTC(R) I served as the battery commander of C/3/71 at Hardheim from summer 78 till spring
79 at which time I was promo-ted to Maj and became chief of the Nuclear Surety team at the IGs office at 32d .
I had a great time at the battery even though it was a bit of a drive from our community. I remember well the
German countryside and towns around the site. Many is the time I have longed for a schnitzel sandwich from
Engels. I served under Bn Cdrs Lynch and Webb. I had served with Webb in Vietnam. I returned to the states
in 81 to spend the next 7 years in the DC area working both with a joint program and at the Army Chief of Staff
for Intelligence. I retired in 88, served about 8 years in the corporate world as a beltway bandit and then moved
to Tyler, TX to be near aging parents. I am still here, having spent the time as a college professor of computer
science and teacher education. I would enjoy hearing from any of my old comrades. I took a bus ride from
Tyler to Savannah a year ago and wouldnt you know it - one of my soldiers from that battery also on the bus
recognized me and we had a mini reunion for a few hundred miles. Larry

Chief Webb,
Came across your site today and may I say that I am impressed. I was an MP on
"the HILL" from 77 - 79 under Capt. Scott, SFC Mayfield, and
SSG Ron Bean. Very recently several of my MP brethren have come back incontact with one another and it is amazing the bond we formed there
in Dallau! Please join our Dallau MP group on yahoo, it is free. We all have very fond memories of you, all a little scared of you but respected you
as a professional soldier. We are putting together a Dallau MP reunion next summer which you would be welcomed to attend. To any other Dallau MP's
who served from 76-80 you are welcome to join our group
and trade stories, see pictures, and attend the reunion.
Thanks for this site Chief !

Hi,
I'm not sure what brought it to mind, but my thoughts drifted back to my
time in Germany while I was in the service.
I was in Dallau at the Nike Stellung.
The unit popped into my head, and I googled it. I was surprised to see the web site. I was there from '74-'76. Often I looked around at the old place
realizing it had been there since I was born. I went back to the site in '88, as I married a local girl, and we often returned to Mosbach to visit family.I

First of all I would like to thank you for the hard work and detail you have put into this web site. I am Ken Thomas who was assigned to HHB from 1978-1983, as
the NCOIC of the S-4. During that time I had the chance to serve with what I think where some of the best Officers, WO, and Enlisted soldiers I have ever served
with. To start listing names would not do justice, as I suffer with the same problem Cpt Cheek has, old age memory. By the way Cpt Cheek was my battery
commander. As I looked at the long list of names in Taps I was overwhelmed to see the names of these fine soldiers, many whom I served with, that have
passed. My prayers go forth to the families and loved ones. I would love to hear from those that I served with during my time in 3/71 ADA. My e-mail
address is carolken129@peoplescom.net. Also we are interested in attending the next reunion. Thanks again for your wonderful
work and detail presented here.

Hello Howard
I just found your site, and it brings back some powerful memories. I was stationed in Hardhiem, with Charlie Battery, from 10/68 thru 12/69
I was the Courier and Mail Clerk. I have great memories of Hardheim and the great guys that were there then, Our Capt was John Thomas
And the First sgt was Sgt Tedder, a better top sgt, I have never known. I lived off base with Bob Anton, Rich Christensen, and Jeff Curtin.
I remember the trips to TBB and the crazy times. I remember that were originally with the 67th artillery and I use to have to make a mail run
And pick up beer supplies in Wertheim, and later when we switched to the 71st., I had to drive every day to Kornigwesthiem, right outside to
Stuggart. Would love to hear from any of the guys from that time.
Thanks

Hello Howard:
Great site. Often wondered how the folks I served with @ Karlsruhe from 1968- 1969, are doing. Had some good times. Sure were
a bunch of skilled people that could repair or build just about anything. I was a 52D20 and my section chief was Sgt. Bradley & Sgt.
Collins. Sgt Bradley often spoke of a Sgt Roberts (Pop Roberts) who rotated to Nam just before I arrived. Seems that during a
WWII battle he captured a German soldier and sent him to one of our POW camps (not sure who captured who first). He latter
escaped and captured Pop Roberts whom he sent to one of their POW camps. They met again after the war and became closer
than brothers. Pop Roberts married a German girl, I think from Pforzheim. One time Sgt Bradley and I had finished some generator
field mods. @ D- Btry and stopped for dinner @ a guess house in Pforzheim. In walks Pop Roberts who finished his tour in Nam and
was doing some leave time before his new station. I was impressed by Pop Roberts and his easy going nature. Had to ask him about
the War and his time in a POW camp. He was polite, but somewhat short in his response. Enough questions. We, mainly they, told
stories of all the impossible jobs the DSP performed @ A B C & D Btys during the early sixties. Later that evening, a man walked
up to our table and said something to Pop Roberts in German. Believe me, I have never , to this day, experienced anything like
this. It was a tearful reunion between two soldiers, fighting on opposite sides, who didn't kill each other, instead, one captured
the other who latter escaped only to capture the other. Needless to say, the party lasted well into the night. I was just a 20year
old kid and there was no way I could keep up with these old-timers. Sorry for babbling on so.…..I don't know, but this has always
been special to me and I thought it would be nice to share.
Take care,

My name is James O’Connor, I was an MP assigned to Bravo Battery in 1977-1978. At the time we lived at Wilkins Barracks and drove out to the site to work our
24 on 24 off. There were a lot of great people assigned to the Battery at that time. Our Platoon Sergeant was a SFC Patton; he would never do us right on our
EER’s. We would try to get over on him whenever we had a chance; he actually was a good guy who would always help you out. I can recall trying to hide our
books, magazines or whatever when we were on tower. We were young men who had no idea about the real dangers of terrorism in those days, even though we
would get briefed on Bader Meinhoff and The Black September Group and how they may attempt to enter the down range area and seize a warhead or nuke. I
salute all those who served there. This is a great site and certainly brought back a lot of good memories for me.

My name is Richard Jeschke and I was stationed with D Brty 3rd Missile,
71st Arty from March 1959 to April 1961. We moved the Battery from Karlsruhe
to Pforheim about Nov. 1960. I would like to hear from anyone who was in "D"
Battery at these times. I was present when the company gave the old "552"
flag to a Master Sergeant who was retiring after 30 years. I helped with the move
to Pforheim, setting up the radar site. I was in the motor pool then a TTR and MTR
operator. I went home and joined the Air Force ( So I didn't have midnight bed checks )
and try to get back to Germany. I ended up in the Far East.
Thank you for this website, it was very interesting.

Today I was notified of the passing of a true soldier. CSM Blankenship has passed away. CSM Blankenship commanded my respect because he cared
for the troops. was an infantryman in a Air Defense Battalion and he was superb in the role. He had a lot of respect for the air defense people because of
the amount of hours they put in. He had high praise for us air defenders CSM Blankenship was a no nonsense soldier and he respected by all who knew
him and was lucky enough to serve with him. His name is listed in the TAP'S SECTION.

Just found this site and thought I'd check it out. My name is Allen Cummings and I was in the S-4 office from June 1979 to June 1981 as both a Sp/4 and
Sgt, so I was there when Col. Epperson took command and we saw each other practically every day. He was one of the few officers that I really liked and
respected. I remember hearing commo chatter, during the change of command inspection of one of the line batteries, that he was really bringing the smoke
on them. That's when we started calling him the Dragon. The red came later when he wanted just about everything, including the front of Bn. HQ painted
red. I even painted the latrine in HQ with red laquer. I was really saddened to learn of his passing. He was a good man.If anyone has any knowledge of
CW2 Sirico, Sfc Thomas, Sgt Borge or anyoneelse from the S-4 or anyone assigned to HHB from June 1979 to June 1981, have them contact me at
alonawing@msn.com . I had forgotten just how much my time over there meant to me until I found this site. I made a lot offriends there that I will always
remember. Some of them hold a very special place in my heart. I really would love to hear from them again. Thanks for the chance to possibly connect with
them.
