Great site Howard! I was a MP at Bravo from Christmas 1981 to spring of 1983. Lived at Wilkins then out to the site once the 'new' barracks were built. Bus rides to and from the site (Driven by Sgt. Comer?), getting 'dogged' or giving one during the ride. Germans on Mopeds, but with full leather gear always made us smile. I remember learning the song "We're the boys from Bravo..." from Hedger, Rusty and Oporto who were old timers and singing it with my buddies, Saltzman, Arbec and Turberville as newbie's.
Reading all the guest book entries really is cool. Thanks to Mark Keegan who took and kept pictures of 'down range' (I never took any) and now has them posted on the web.

This brings back memories. I was in A 3/71 as a "missile maggot" 16B from late 1980 for about a year. In late 1981 or early 1982 I got orders for the 1st Patriot Battalion back at Ft. Bliss. Made Sgt. in early '83 but decided not to re-enlist. I still can't believe it's been almost 30 years. I'm going to have to pull out the photo album now. Sad to hear about the dragon. Email me if you'd like. Robin Ulery 07/19/09 Barton Ricks
What a trip down memory lane, 50 years ago,(57-59) seems like "just the other day", I was with the first group of great guys to go from Ft. Bliss to Karlsruhe to meet the 552nd troops Alfa and Bravo Battery went on to Wilkins Barracks at Kornwestheim, and set up the Temp. sites in the Mud across from the Golf Course and the Military Housing Project..
You have a great site Mr. Webb, Thanks
for the trip...

HEY, To all my fellow brothers and sister who have had the pleasure to serve in 3/71 ADA. I had been stationed from Feb '81-Jul '82 in the Commo platoon of HHB at Wilkins Barracks. I too remember LTC Epperson and his introductory talk with soldiers when we first arrived. I also remember having to drive him around to all the batteries and 94th group Command. I got kind of lucky shortly after arriving there.Within 3-4 months I was had been selected to be a member of the 32nd

B Btry 3-71 from 1980 – 1982, Under the command of the Red Dragon…… I can’t believe no one has made reference to Camp Five Pines, as we called it. Sgt Lee, Sgt Mathews, Llyod, Poulter, Jefferies, Dugan, Fields, Rusty, Clovel, Cletus, Dillard, Hedger and the rest of the crew…. We were hard core, greeted the new commander with a variety of elegant and raunchy Christmas songs on the Eve followed by – “We’re the boys from Bravo…..” song that most from that time will still remember. Hi Chief Webb- have put together - wow! I served with you as your PLL Clerk "on the hill" at A Battery 3/71st ADA, Dallau 1978-1980. It's pretty wild that it's been 30 years since I was in Dallau, brings back a lot of memories. I remember the A-10's buzzing the hill & walking up to the hill & looking up to see a low flying British Vulcan right above me. I don't miss the tactical evals or the trips up to the hill in the back of a deuce and a half on freezing cold mornings. It would be great to reconnect with old friends from Dallau, here's my email address my

I was stationed at B-3-71 as a 16C20 fire control operator from January 10, 1974 - July 14, 1976. I was a Hipar operator almost the entire time except for being retrained for CBR during my last tactical evaluation in 1976, after my Hipar replacements had been trained. Those were two and a half years that I wouldn't trade for anything. Made lots of good friends and try to keep in touch as much as I can. I have no problem with contacting soldiers that were at the 3rd and 71st before and after I was there, so feel free to email me. larryswinney@swbell.net . I also have a photo website with pics of Bravo at the time I was there, along with other albums. Feel free to look. Go to www.picturetrail.co/radar . If you can't access the photos, let me know. 11/15/08 Howard,
I came across the 71st ADA website. I was assigned to HQ Battalion in Kornwestheim from 1972 to 1973. SP 4 Comm Center Specialist. They moved us to Ludwigsburg when the barracks were renovated and then back again. LTC Jean Leger was commander when I left. I would love to get a unit patch. Can anyone tell me to find one? Howard, thanks for the awesome site! Was assigned to Alpha Btry IFC as a 16C from Mar 1980 thru Mar 1983.Was trained as a Hipar operator, but spent the vast majority of my time in Comsec/Emas as a B team member. Being part of the "DRAGON'S BN" was an honor for myself as it should be for anyone that had that privilige. Col Epperson was one who would very quickly let you know when you were wrong, but just as quickly if not quicker, commend you for a job well done. bthornton41@yahoo.com Would like to hear from anyone that was there at the same time. I was assigned to B Btry and HHB in 76-77. I served at HQ as the PSNCO/SIDPERS and handled in and out processing as well as strength reporting. Today I came across the site while I was googling Gary E. Epperson. I was shocked to see that it was an acknowledgement of his passing. I followed the link and low and behold, a site dedicated to the men (and a few women) of 3/71 ADA AKA The Dragon Battalion.D Btry 3/71 was my first assignment in the Army. I arrived in Nov. ’77. I was stationed there for 3 ½ years as I recall. Initially as a missile pusher then I was offered the mail currier position if I’d reenlist (which I did). Sometime in 1980 I moved to Battalion and worked for the Dragon as his Public Affairs specialist (a position he created) during which I created a Battalion mimeograph newspaper and later began submitting articles to the 32d AADCOM News. While at Battalion level, I had the opportunity to get out to all Batteries and was also involved in the “history making” exercise where we road marched the Nike Hercules system under Epperson’s command which was the first time the system was road marched since fielding of the system (according to the Colonel). I was at Battalion until ’82 when I PCSed back to Ft. Bliss. I have many fond memories of not only Delta 3/71 but the Battalion as a whole. It was my stepping stone to a 20 year Army career. A choice I will never regret.
Daniel Warren and I served as 31m40 radio op relay at BOC from 70-73. My time there can only be described as challenging. Did anyone go to the Sheperds fest in Margroning? Not sure of that spelling but it was the city right before you got to BOC and the river. Would like to hear from other folks in commo during that time. Does anyone know if CSM Alston or LT Hall are still alive?? My name is Ron Risser and I was assigned to B3/71 from July69-Jan71. As a 95Bravo, I was a tower jockey at B Battery and later landed a job as a Bn. Personnel Clerk at HQ. Nothing but great memories of the times and friendships. I have vacationed in Germany a couple times and in 2000, my wife and I took and son, daughter, and son-in-law to Kornwestheim. I was sad to see that most of Wilkin Barracks is gone. Did not make it out to GrossSachenheim. May try to make it to a reunion. rdrisser@woh.rr.com April 25, 2008 Sir I was an MP stationed at C Btry 3/71 ADA Hardheim, Germany between 1979 and 1982. I want to thank you for your time and effort to create this website. I hope that more people joint the guest book and maybe we can get in touch with some of the old friends. We called Hardheim, (Hardtime). I remember many of the people in the Btry at that time and always bring me great joy. I would love to hear from them again. My e-mail address at home is: 95b_709@bellsouth.net and Francisco.Ramos@va.gov at work. Thanks again. I say hello to all the soldiers who served in 3/71 ADA. I’m very proud to be part of the team. Francisco Ramos Marquez March 25, 2008 Every once in awhile, I find myself wandering down memory lane and wonder if there are any others who do the same. Well, I can't tell you what a joy it was to run across your website. My name was Pam Curtis (PFC and SP/4). I served in A 3/71st in Dallau in 3/81 through 12/83. Also, in B 3/71st in Grossachsenheim in 12/83 through 9/84. I worked on IFC, on the TTR, TRR, but my main job was the MTR. Also spent some of my time in EMAS and pulling my share of guard duty; with my faithful companion, Mushka (black german shep. dog), nbc, cross training on Launcher Hill, along with a few trips to NAMFI, Crete. I remember the "Dragon" very well. He would be breathing down my neck just waiting to pounce if I didn't sit on my hands during the TAC Eval, yelling out, "MTR Reject", LOL. I also remember him shaking my hand and how it made me feel really proud, that was quite an honor for a young MTR operator and soldier. I had allot of respect for the man. So, I just wanted to put my name out there and see if I could find anyone who was there at the same time that I was. It was really like a family to me and the memories of those times will always be with me. My email is michaela@dfn.com Thank you for this site, Sincerely, Pam Sneed, New Mexico March 10, 2008 Sir I was an MP stationed at C Btry 3/71 ADA Hardheim, Germany between 1979 and 1982. February 27, 2008 Hi, I saw this web site and was excited to read through it. I did not see anyone from my time at Bravo and Charlie Batteries but who knows what may come of this e-mail. My name is Mike Griffith (Griff). I was at Bravo battery from 6/69 – 2/71. Then I was at Charlie battery from 6/71 – 4/74. I worked at the IFC.I would like to hear from any of the old gang from that time. Thanks Mike February 26, 2008 Sir, I was station with HHB 3rd 71st ADA between 1975-1978. February 2, 2008 Sir, I was an MP stationed at Wilkins Barracks with Jim O’Connor, Pat Herron, Rick Loftus, Cliff Emery, ‘Pony’ Phillips, Kevin Noonan, and a whole slew of other guys from 11/77 to 01/79. The worst part of my tour at Bravo Battery was the boredom - and trying to get comfortable in that blasted 4’ by 4’ plywood box sitting on top of that tower so I could take an unauthorized nap. I wonder how Sgt. Rottello is and if he still likes Black Russians. I remember leaving Post 4 and taking the Barn keys back to the barracks with me and realizing I still had them. Quick! To the bahnhof, up the hill, and down range. Loftus wanted to rip my head off when I got there! I also remember muddy mattresses, NATO inspections, the cold, the wind on top of that hill, and the Luftwaffe flying their jets really low over Post 3, Tower 1, Post 4, and Tower 3. I love fighters and thoroughly enjoyed the tremendous thunder and after-shock as they roared over us. Thrilling stuff at 18 & 19 years old! I transferred to an MP station in Zweibruecken between Pirmasens and Kaiserslautern (K-town). I did a two week TDY in West Berlin and thoroughly hated it. When we got off the train in Berlin, our greeter welcomed us with, “Welcome to the world’s largest POW camp.” That set the tone for next 2 weeks. Anyway, it was great finding the website, looking at the photos, and reading everyone’s postings – it took me back to when I was thinner, dumber (well, I hope I’m smarter now), and wide-eyed to what the world was showing me. I won’t be going to any of the reunions because that’s not my thing but I will be coming back to the website to keep-up on the new postings. Take care. Karl Wink January 30, 2008 Thank you for having my father (CWO4 Jerome Sonnier) remembered on your site.
Jerome S. Sonnier Gy/Sgt U.S.M.C. January29,2008 Howard, I just read thru the Guest Book entries and wanted to add my own comments. I served in HQ Brty., working at the BOC, from Oct 62 till December 66. Part of that time the unmarried BOC personnel lived in the Bravo Btry. Barracks. I returned to Delta Btry 3/71 at Würmbergn June 72 as a Fire Control Mechanic, was appointed Warrant Officer WO-1 in January 1973 and transferred to B/2/56 at Landau. Later in 1973 I managed to wrangle a transfer back to Bravo Btry of 3/71, since Gross-Sachsenheim was the birthplace of my wife, Inge. I served in Bravo Btry as a Fire Control Warrant from September 1973 till my return to Ft. Bliss, TX. in February 1978. This gives me a service time in 3/71 of about nine years total. I truly enjoyed my time in 3/71 in the 60s and the 70s, and spent a lot of time travelling in Europe I still keep up with a few of my old friends by email. My email address is: RSmithCW2@AOL.com. January 17, 2008 WOW what a site. I was with HHB and worked 24 on 24 off in the BOC. 81-82 The top brass got tired of us trucking in and out so mid way through my tour, the whole HQ platoon was moved out to Gross sach. Great memories of some fine people. Our XO was Christy Stevens, one of the first women to graduate West Point Dave Media, Bill McNabb, Gregg Van Buskirk, Wally Wilson, Dick Russell, Tom Clifford, Chuck Mardis, Ron Puckett, and Rodney “Foots” Johnson Great crew and we still have a tab at Cartwright’s I’m sure. Love to find pictures of the old place. I’ll keep checking back. Regards, WARD G. SMITH, Ward.Smith.ctr@socom.mil Senior Media Editor USSOCOM/Joint Psychological Operation Support
January 3, 2008 Howard, Bother Miltenberger told me about this site earlier today - what a treasure. Very well done. I was the Security Platoon Leader for C/3/71 from November '79 - January '80. Then, largely through an unlikely confluence of events, I was selected by Gen. Means to be the Command Security Officer in Darmstadt from January '80 - November '81. During my time in Hardheim I have some great memories to include quaffing snitzels at Engels, winning Thursday night dart throwing contests at a Hardheim bar, the name of which escapes me and pulling a 24 hour shift in a tower to see what my soldiers were going through. As the Command Security Officer, I visited all the Nike Batteries to see how the MPs were doing. As you may recall, MP moral could get quite low, despite our fond memories. I had a 2' by 3' sign made for my desk that read "Where there's an MP, there's a way" and have tried to live by it. I too carry with me still what I learned those three years and sometimes think "what would a young officer do who was always trying to do the right thing?" Cheers, Tim McCune zich6@hotmail.com Howard, I was absolutely astonished to have stumbled across this excellent website!! I was equally astonished to learn of the passing of a very hard man, COL (ret) Gary Epperson. I was the Security Platoon Leader for A/3/71 from May 80-April 81, then the BN S2 from May – Dec 81. COL Epperson was an extremely hard man, but made us all believers in what it took to be an officer and a Soldier. I was saddened to learn of his passing. My assignment at Dallau was a defining one for my subsequent career. The things I learned there in terms of leadership and what it took to care for MP Soldiers who were working ungodly hours helped me throughout my 23 year career and eventual follow-on career in the civilian world. It has been 20+ years, but I would really enjoy hearing from members of my old platoon, peers and even remaining superiors who served in 3/71 ADA 80-81. Please post this to the guestbook section. Thank you for the memories and for maintaining such a wonderful website. For hose of us who served in those dark and spooky days, I thank you again for your time. Regards Dan Miltenberger LTC, ret, MPA/3/71 ADA _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
December 30, 2007 Ever since I left Germany in early 1980, I think back on the days I spent at Wilkens Barracks as an MP tower rat attached to B Battery 3/71st ADA. As Chief O'Connor mentioned, we were bussed out of the barracks to the site for our 24 on 24 off shifts. I remember the towers pretty clearly and spending the few hours off in the bunkroom playing "Risk" with the guys in between sleeping in filthy bunks covered in mud! Guess it was better than digging a foxhole! I remember the jackrabbits and small deer in the fields surrounding the site and the sheer boredom of the towers. But what I remember best is how different the town area was from here in New Jersey! I still don't think I've had a better beer than what I sampled there! At the time I was glad to leave, I got a compassionate reassignment, but my time from late 1979 to early 1980 was certainly memorable. If anyone has photos of Wilkens and the site at Grossachsenheim, please share them! Be well all, and thank you for your service. We were the defenders of freedom and democracy back in those days; be proud!

SEP.14, 2007 Hi Howard, Just "chanced" on your website, Was delighted and somewhat sadden.... Delighted to see that there is a movement to keep the "story" alive. Sadden to see so many of us passed on.I was stationed at HQ (BOC) 1st Bn, 67th Arty from November 1962 to May 1963. I was, then, transferred to B Btry, 1st Bn, 67th Arty based at Mainbullau, Germany.I was a 16C Fire Control Crewman there until February 1968. I am Larry Manning LTC(R) I served as the battery commander of C/3/71 at Hardheim from summer 78 till spring 79 at which time I was promo-ted to Maj and became chief of the Nuclear Surety team at the IGs office at 32d . I had a great time at the battery even though it was a bit of a drive from our community. I remember well the German countryside and towns around the site. Many is the time I have longed for a schnitzel sandwich from Engels. I served under Bn Cdrs Lynch and Webb. I had served with Webb in Vietnam. I returned to the states in 81 to spend the next 7 years in the DC area working both with a joint program and at the Army Chief of Staff for Intelligence. I retired in 88, served about 8 years in the corporate world as a beltway bandit and then moved to Tyler, TX to be near aging parents. I am still here, having spent the time as a college professor of computer science and teacher education. I would enjoy hearing from any of my old comrades. I took a bus ride from Tyler to Savannah a year ago and wouldnt you know it - one of my soldiers from that battery also on the bus recognized me and we had a mini reunion for a few hundred miles. MAY 20. 2007 Hi, The unit popped into my head, and I googled it. I was surprised to see the web site. I was there from '74-'76. Often I looked around at the old place realizing it had been there since I was born. I went back to the site in '88, as I married a local girl, and we often returned to Mosbach to visit family.I am wondering if anyone I was there
with has also found their way to the
site.Any info would be appreciated, _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ June 16, 2007

First of all I would like to thank you for the hard work and detail you have put into this web site. I am Ken Thomas who was assigned to HHB from 1978-1983, as the NCOIC of the S-4. During that time I had the chance to serve with what I think where some of the best Officers, WO, and Enlisted soldiers I have ever served with. To start listing names would not do justice, as I suffer with the same problem Cpt Cheek has, old age memory. By the way Cpt Cheek was my battery commander. As I looked at the long list of names in Taps I was overwhelmed to see the names of these fine soldiers, many whom I served with, that have passed. My prayers go forth to the families and loved ones. I would love to hear from those that I served with during my time in 3/71 ADA. My e-mail address is carolken129@peoplescom.net. Also we are interested in attending the next reunion. Thanks again for your wonderful work and detail presented here. Ken Thomas

Hello Howard I just found your site, and it brings back some powerful memories. I was stationed in Hardhiem, with Charlie Battery, from 10/68 thru 12/69 I was the Courier and Mail Clerk. I have great memories of Hardheim and the great guys that were there then, Our Capt was John Thomas And the First sgt was Sgt Tedder, a better top sgt, I have never known. I lived off base with Bob Anton, Rich Christensen, and Jeff Curtin. I remember the trips to TBB and the crazy times. I remember that were originally with the 67th artillery and I use to have to make a mail run And pick up beer supplies in Wertheim, and later when we switched to the 71st., I had to drive every day to Kornigwesthiem, right outside to Stuggart. Would love to hear from any of the guys from that time.
Thanks Joe Bledsoe Chicago, Il.

From Richard Loftus : I was in Bravo Battery from 77 to 79 working down range as a tower rat. Most of the time I worked Post 3 on what we called the Electric Chair. Just reading some of the other posting brings back so many memories of friends and good time. Recalling Cliff Emery falling out of a 3rd floor window. Phillips , Floato , Sgt M Jackson Sgt Kim O’Connor’s Danny Barlow. And all of the others. Any one wanting to contact me my email address is rloftus@bellsouth.net 14 February 2007 Hello Howard: Great site. Often wondered how the folks I served with @ Karlsruhe from 1968- 1969, are doing. Had some good times. Sure were a bunch of skilled people that could repair or build just about anything. I was a 52D20 and my section chief was Sgt. Bradley & Sgt. Collins. Sgt Bradley often spoke of a Sgt Roberts (Pop Roberts) who rotated to Nam just before I arrived. Seems that during a WWII battle he captured a German soldier and sent him to one of our POW camps (not sure who captured who first). He latter escaped and captured Pop Roberts whom he sent to one of their POW camps. They met again after the war and became closer than brothers. Pop Roberts married a German girl, I think from Pforzheim. One time Sgt Bradley and I had finished some generator field mods. @ D- Btry and stopped for dinner @ a guess house in Pforzheim. In walks Pop Roberts who finished his tour in Nam and was doing some leave time before his new station. I was impressed by Pop Roberts and his easy going nature. Had to ask him about the War and his time in a POW camp. He was polite, but somewhat short in his response. Enough questions. We, mainly they, told stories of all the impossible jobs the DSP performed @ A B C & D Btys during the early sixties. Later that evening, a man walked up to our table and said something to Pop Roberts in German. Believe me, I have never , to this day, experienced anything like this. It was a tearful reunion between two soldiers, fighting on opposite sides, who didn't kill each other, instead, one captured the other who latter escaped only to capture the other. Needless to say, the party lasted well into the night. I was just a 20year old kid and there was no way I could keep up with these old-timers. Sorry for babbling on so.…..I don't know, but this has always been special to me and I thought it would be nice to share. Take care,
Roy Ranic

My name is James O’Connor, I was an MP assigned to Bravo Battery in 1977-1978. At the time we lived at Wilkins Barracks and drove out to the site to work our 24 on 24 off. There were a lot of great people assigned to the Battery at that time. Our Platoon Sergeant was a SFC Patton; he would never do us right on our EER’s. We would try to get over on him whenever we had a chance; he actually was a good guy who would always help you out. I can recall trying to hide our books, magazines or whatever when we were on tower. We were young men who had no idea about the real dangers of terrorism in those days, even though we would get briefed on Bader Meinhoff and The Black September Group and how they may attempt to enter the down range area and seize a warhead or nuke. I salute all those who served there. This is a great site and certainly brought back a lot of good memories for me. Chief James B. Today I was notified of the passing of a true soldier. CSM Blankenship has passed away. CSM Blankenship commanded my respect because he cared for the troops. was an infantryman in a Air Defense Battalion and he was superb in the role. He had a lot of respect for the air defense people because of the amount of hours they put in. He had high praise for us air defenders CSM Blankenship was a no nonsense soldier and he respected by all who knew him and was lucky enough to serve with him. His name is listed in the TAP'S SECTION. 2005 Just found this site and thought I'd check it out. My name is Allen Cummings and I was in the S-4 office from June 1979 to June 1981 as both a Sp/4 and Sgt, so I was there when Col. Epperson took command and we saw each other practically every day. He was one of the few officers that I really liked and respected. I remember hearing commo chatter, during the change of command inspection of one of the line batteries, that he was really bringing the smoke on them. That's when we started calling him the Dragon. The red came later when he wanted just about everything, including the front of Bn. HQ painted red. I even painted the latrine in HQ with red laquer. I was really saddened to learn of his passing. He was a good man.If anyone has any knowledge of CW2 Sirico, Sfc Thomas, Sgt Borge or anyoneelse from the S-4 or anyone assigned to HHB from June 1979 to June 1981, have them contact me at alonawing@msn.com . I had forgotten just how much my time over there meant to me until I found this site. I made a lot offriends there that I will always remember. Some of them hold a very special place in my heart. I really would love to hear from them again. Thanks for the chance to possibly connect with them. Allen D. Cummings ( Sgt (Ret)

Just stumbled on this site and it made my day!! Noticed that there is a lot of communication from the Delta Btry. guys. I hope I can stir up some action from the Bravo Btry crews. I was stationed with B/3/71 from 1961 to 1963. I was XO for Capt. Bobby J. Chaney at the time I rotated in 1963. Had an occasion to revisit the site Oct 2001 and was disappointed to find it has been totally distroyed and turned into a rubbish dump. But I could still here the Bravo voices, could still see my desk standing on the concrete slab where my office once was, and could still see our stars and stripes waving from the battery flag pole. If there are any Bravo folks out there that know me, (or even if you don't know me) I would appreciate if you would contact me at charliereb@hotmail.com and lets rehash some old times. Charlie L. Website is great! I transferred from Ft. Sill, OK (77-78) as an MP at B-Btry, 3/71 in Gross Sachsenheim from 78 - 79. Lived on the economy in an Apartment in Horrheim with Widman family. Great experience. 24 hrs. on & 24 off "down range", did get a little old after a while. Lost some money playing cards, but got to know some great people: Lyle Burnett, Myles Jackson, Malcolm Bailie. Thanks for the site, brings back some great memories! Reed Davis, (77-80)
24 Jun 2004 Howard, Great site. It's good to see all of the names of fellows that served in the 3/71st. My time was spent in Bravo Battery. When I first arrived at Bravo in March 1959 we were at Wilkins Barracks with A Battery and both Batteries was operating from temporary sites. Bravo was still just a Nike Ajax Battery at that time. In May 1959 our permanent site at Grossachsenheim was completed and we made the move at that time. August 1959 brought the first Herc's when a package from Bliss arrived and life at Bravo was never the same again. I finished up my time at Gross in March 1961 and have thought about that time in my life often. In 1990 Bravo held its first reunion at Blue Springs, Missouri and we have been getting together every two years since. Our eighth reunion will be held this August 16 - 20 at Frankenmuth, Michigan. Our reunions are no longer just Bravo Veterans, but include Veterans from all units of the 3/71st and all are welcome. If you would like to have more information on this please contact me at chdlc@terraworld.net. Have a Great time in Branson. Clete Hall

I was stationed with 3/71 ADA in 1980 as a PVT, the first assignment of many overseas. The DRAGON was the Battalion Commander, and I am truly sad to find out that he has passed on. I didn't retire at Bliss like most from the ADA so I don't get much news from anyone. The man was truly a great Commander!! I remember I arrived on the 23rd of December 1980, straight out of Logan Heights and was brought to his office so he could introduce himself. The rest of the staff was having the Staff Christmas party, yet he was busy with paperwork at his desk. The only time I was ever exposed to that much rank had been during an inspection while in basic training and I was scared to death with just him and me in the room. He quickly not only put me "At Ease", but made me feel at ease as well. He gave me his spiel about what was expected of a soldier in his unit, warned me about drugs etc. and told me I was to be assigned to the BOC because I was MOS 16H. He told me that I could choose one of two paths at the BOC. I could either work 24-on-24-off shoveling snow in winter and working a swing blade on the berms in summer, or study the appropriate operations manuals and be put on the PRP Program. I remember that he only looked up from his work briefly while talking, which he obviously knew made me feel better not having to look him in the eye. He had a poster above his desk with a bunch ducks on it. The caption read "LEAD, FOLLOW, OR GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY." Needless to say......I became quite proficient at my job as I watched my comrades work those swing blades on the berm. When the Bn would have a major equipment outage he would always come directly to the BOC to stay on top of it. He wouldn't sit in the office, but in the EMAS van with me. He always had an outrageous story relating to whatever was going on. He was the type of Commander who made his soldiers want to excell. I worked 24-24 for two years and had a great time as well as a great experience while assigned to the Dragon Battalion. If any of his family, or that of Maj Christionsen ( the S-3 ) view this website, my condolences go out to all. Lawrence W. Reid, MSG RET

What a pleasure to find this website! I was at the BOC out side of Gross Sachsenheim co-located with Bravo Battery from 11/68 to 1/70. I spent the next eight months as S-2 in Kornwestheim. I lived in an apartment in Oberriexingen, a few kilometers from Gross Sachsenheim. It was a lot of fun--most of the time. Just came across this site via CNN news. What a Battalion. It was a privileged to work under and with a great group of leaders and soldiers during my tour wth the 3/71 ADA. Started at D Btry. followed by a short TDY tour to C Btry. (to cover the lost of the IFC chief) then finally was assigned to B Brty. Capt. Visser was our Btry. Commander and Col. Epperson (The Dragon) was our Commander. We broke many records, from NAMFI to ORE’s and it can be said Col Epperson played a big part in these accomplishments. Character building assignment. Chief Frady…I’m still thawing out from our commo
problem we
had
between
areas.
Best
wishes to
Chief
Elliston,
West, and
Kitsch.
Excellent
site.

First, let
me thank
Larry
Bible for
introducing
me to this
site.
Just a bit about me. I was assigned to C-Btry, SP/5(16B) Asst Sect Chief, from
around February thru June/July 1968. About this time, I was assigned
to the HHB
where I worked in the Bn S-2 as a Repos Clerk (16H). Later moved up to Bn S-2
NCOIC and made SGT E5(AJ). I left country Nov 1968
enroute to Vietnam. And no, I
did not serve in Air Defense in Nam.
I am looking for several people. If anyone knows of them please put them in
touch
with me through my e-mail address: 1st Lt/Capt Michael Desko (C-Btry & S-2
OIC), Larry Laube (rank?,Bn S-2 clerk, and SP/5 Charles "Chuck"
Lewis.
BTW, I have seen pictures of C-Btry, on a Pershing Missile website, and it has
been totally razed except for a motor pool vehicle service rack.
You can't even
tell otherwise that C-Btry was there.
Happy Holidays! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

Just found out from the Sonniers about great reunion in Branson. We don't want to miss the next one!! Have sent all info in. Great to see roster and have many fond memories of old friends.
Great website, will enjoy watching it often. We were in Germany 1974-1977. My assignment was the most rewarding and memorable of my entire career.

First of all I would like to say "Hats Off" to you Howard for organizing the reunion and putting it all together. I missed this one, but I promise I will not miss the next. The pictures of the reunion are super. Really wished I could have been there to see you. To all my former bosses, friends, and comrades in arms, it is really great to see the old 3/71 espirit de corps. I have to say that reading the list of comrades on the "Taps" section was an eye opener. To my old friends in Delta and HHB, I am looking forward to exchanging "war stories and old times." If you'all get down around Atlanta, GA look me up. Would like to see and hear from you. Respectfully Yours

You have a great website. Obviously, the esprit de corps of the 3/71 is still alive and well.
I served with the Hq Hq Btry (DSP) 5th Missile 6th Artillery (Nike Hercules) in Hoppstaedten, Germany 1969 - 1971 as a Sp4, MOS 23N20, after a year of training at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.
I had the opportunity to go back and visit Germany last Christmas, and had a great time.
Happy holidays to all.

Howard, sorry that I couldn't get to your 2002 reunion, but I enjoyed the photos and knowing that you will do it again in 2004. It's on my calendar to attend. You have done wonders with the web site, and I know that your efforts for this year's reunion did not go unnoticed. Outstanding job!!! I'll check back to the web site from time to time so as to reopen communications with old friends and fellow soldiers of 3/71. Thanks again for your efforts.

I think the web site is great. I will visit it often to see if there is anyone I know. I was in D BTRY at PFORZHEIN

HARVEY ALLDREDG 19 Oct 2002
The party sounded great.
I would have love to seen all of the people I haven't seen in years. I
WILL BE AT THE NEXT ONE. I'm also looking for Dale Van Sky or Lori Archie. We were in D Battery, 3/71 ADA, ( Pforzheim
). Greetings to all of the Delta Dogs 19 Oct 2002 I am absolutely beside myself in finding this site. It is some consolation for finding out about the reunion only 3 days after its completion.
I look forward to the 2004 reunion and to making contact with some of my old friends from Delta battery 1969 and 1970.
Thank you Mr. Webb for forwarding me the information and for all your efforts. I'm sure there are others involved and to them I also offer my sincere thanks.
BTW: I have been to Germany several times on business in the last two and a half years. It is troubling to see the D 3/71 barracks abandoned and run down. The IFC area is now a small industrial area and the launcher area is a municipal project behind a fence that prevents anyone from getting near it.
